Gaoshanhe Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Northeast Shaanxi. The Gaoshanhe Fm was named by the Qinling Party of Regional Geological Survey, Ministry of Geology in 1959. The type locality is Gaoshanhe, north of Luonan County, Shaanxi Province. Synonym: Gaoshanhe Gr.
Synonym: (高山河组)
Lithology and Thickness
In the typical section, the Gaoshanhe Fm is composed of littoral-neritic clastic rock and magnesian carbonate rock. It is subdivided into lower, middle and upper members based on lithological association character. Lower member, recorded as 1900 m thick, is characterized by interbedding of sandstone with slate. It consists of unstable conglomerate, quartz sandstone, silty sericite slate, siltstone and feldspar quartz-sandstone, sometimes sandwiched with andesite. Middle member, recorded as 1300 m thick, is dominated by quartz sandstone and feldspar-quartz sandstone in the lower part, while the upper part is dominated by dolomite and sandy dolomite. Upper member, 600 m thick, consists of quartz sandstone and slate, and contains hematite and ferruginous sandstone of several meters thick. The contacts between the lower and middle members and between middle and upper members are conformable. The Gaoshanhe Fm has a total recorded thickness of 3800 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The base covers the Xiong'er Gr volcanic rock (see figure) (Majiahe Fm is the uppermost formation in that Xiong'er Gr).
[Figure: The boundary between the Xiong’er Gr. and the Gaoshanhe Gr (Gaoshanhe Fm).]
Upper contact
The top is in conformable contact with overlying Longjiayuan Fm.
Regional extent
The formation outcrops around Huanglonpu and Xiyuhe, Luonan County (3416-3810 m thick), Lengshuicha, Lantian County (244 m thick), and Longxian County (400 m thick), Shaanxi Province, in Duguan, Lushi County (176-428 m thick), and north part of Luanchuan County (140-260 m thick), Henan Province. According to Xi Wenxiang (1993, oral communication), the previously called Ruyang Gr and members 1, 2 and 3 of Yindonggou Fm, in Baoshan water reservoir south of Queshan County, Henan Province are considered to be a part of the Gaoshanhe Fm.
